On the memory of Rene Teijgeler ( co-founder of Heritage for Peace)

René Teijgeler

This publication originated from the longstanding vision of René Teijgeler, co-founder of Heritage for Peace, who aspired to advance research in heritage protection during crises, especially its vital connection to peacebuilding. After in-depth discussions with René and subsequent collaboration with the Cultural Emergency Response (CER) program, a four-year partnership was established between CER and Heritage for Peace. The joint effort focuses on advocating for the inclusion of cultural heritage within crisis response policies, aiming to pioneer a more inclusive and resilient approach in sectors such as humanitarian aid, peacebuilding, and disaster management.

The first milestone of this partnership is the publication of a white paper, “The Crises-Cultural Heritage Nexus: The Interplay of Crises and Cultural Heritage: Mutual Impacts and Implications.” This volume explores the multifaceted relationship between cultural heritage and crisis response, emphasizing the crucial role heritage plays in strengthening communities and fostering societal resilience. Planned dissemination through social media and expert-led webinars will encourage debate and deepen understanding of these intersections.

Editorial leadership and contributions from Emma Cunliffe, Gaia Bedini, Eva Licci, Ginevra Rollo, and Iona Volynets have been instrumental in bringing this publication to fruition. The team expresses heartfelt thanks to CER for their steadfast partnership and support throughout the project.

This publication invites the global community to engage in dialogue, explore new perspectives, and honor the enduring power of cultural heritage to heal, rebuild, and provide hope in the face of adversity. May the memory of René Teijgeler continue to guide and inspire all those committed to protecting heritage in times of crisis.
